Carola Briese is a Scholarship Ph.D. Candidate at the DFG-funded graduate school "Cultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship" at the University of Rostock. She studied English and French philology, American  Studies and German as a Foreign  Language in Potsdam, Berlin and Paris. In the doctoral programme, her research project "Strategic Publishing in the UK: Staging Black British Fiction in the Postcolonial Marketplace" analyses the (marketing-)strategies applied by UK trade publishers in the  staging process of contemporary black British literature and the (counter-)strategies authors insert on the textual level in response to the oftentimes reductionist and exoticising marketing of their texts.
